Haptic touch

Although haptic touch technology may provide a similar, intuitive user experience as classic touch technology, it adds a number of significant advantages. It allows users to feel the key while pressing it and provides immediate feedback to the fingertips, intuitively confirming the action they have just made. Moreover, haptic touch panels can be made from any material, including glass, metal, plastic, fabric, ceramic and even wood, opening up a whole new range of design possibilities.

How it works

In classic touch-sensitive solutions, the user gets its feedback in a visual manner – the screen is lit up, a message or image appears, et cetera. Haptic technology adds another dimension to the user experience by bringing back the physical experience of the push button, providing feedback to the fingertips. The mechanical stress on the surface is detected and transformed in an electrical signal, which triggers a vibration of the touch area. Haptic feedback is already widely used in gaming consoles and high-end smartphones, but is now making its way into an increasing number of applications, from automotive interiors to household appliances.

Partnership with AITO

Quad Industries uses the software enhanced piezo technology – SEP – of the Dutch-Finnish company AITO as the basis for its haptic touch solutions. SEP combines the best properties of piezoelectricity with highly advanced control software to provide the best possible user experience and a high level of flexibility to design customized user interfaces. SEP also offers the opportunity to create touch sensitive control panels with a variety of materials, such as metal, glass, plastics and textiles.
