Enfucell has developed an all-printed power source, which is a flexible and thin battery made of low cost industrial eco-friendly materials. The chemistry of SoftBattery® is based on zinc and manganese dioxide, and zinc chloride as an electrolyte. Enfucell owns the technology for the battery and its manufacturing.

Quad Industries is an innovative company in the development and manufacturing of user interfaces and printed electronics. The printed batteries are the perfect power source for numerous printed electronics applications. “We are developing all kinds of printed sensors, tags and labels that contribute to the Internet of Things (IoT).” New business manager Arne Casteleyn says. “The printed electronics that we are developing will be embedded on these “things” and in this way objects become smart. They gather and share information. Among each other and in the cloud. And in order to do so, they need a power source. The printed batteries are the perfect power source for these printed electronics because they are flexible and thin, which simplifies integration.“ Casteleyn explains.

The SoftBattery® is built with eco-friendly materials which makes them suitable for disposable applications. Quad Industries aims at integrating the power source directly on the smart label and is thus optimizing the manufacturing process. These batteries are suitable for Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and Near Field Communication (NFC) applications. Possible applications are all kinds of wearables, cosmetic patches, wireless medical and logistics sensors, functional packaging, temperature sensors, humidity sensors…

In addition to screen printing Quad Industries also masters electronic component assembly on flexible foils. Based on their extensive know-how in graphic, electronic and mechanical design, they are able to support customers with their product development needs. This technology further strengthens Quads’ printed electronics technology platform.

Enfucell is a leading customized battery supplier to printed electronics industry. The company has developed SoftBattery®, a thin, flexible and eco-friendly printed power source. Its business model is based on licensing the battery technology. SoftBattery® can be utilized optimally in disposable products which benefit from the thin and flexible form factor. Main application areas include transdermal delivery systems, medical and healthcare products, as well as logistics solutions. Enfucell has licensees currently in Belgium, China, Slovakia, Spain, UK and USA. Enfucell’s engineering team is providing product development services and prototyping of SoftBattery® powered devices in Vantaa, Finland.
