A successful prototyping process | Part 2 | 8 reasons why

The road from concept to a finished product is rarely a straight line. Prototyping is a crucial step in this journey, where ideas are tested, refined, and brought closer to reality. At Quad Industries, we don’t just stop at creating a single prototype; we offer our clients multiple options, giving them the flexibility to test and choose the best solution. This approach not only speeds up the process but ensures that the final product is optimized for both functionality and efficiency.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to product development, especially when it comes to creating novel printed electronics products and entering new markets. There are no ready-mades or sets of components to simply pick and compose from, so starting from scratch is often necessary. Developing new technology is a time-consuming process that requires patience, persistence, and a willingness to iterate and learn from failures. This is one of many reasons why we feel close collaboration and thorough communication with clients from the very start of the project are so vital. Both the client and us need a deep understanding of the problem at hand to find the best solution.

Sure, our Quad team has the technical expertise and design skills to create a single prototype that meets all client requirements, but we prefer to do more. Thanks to our experience, we can anticipate technical issues and see extra potential and opportunities during the development process. As a result, we don’t create just one prototype, but quickly develop multiple viable solutions that customers can compare, try, and test. From this set, typically two concepts are selected as a basis for further development and to create a number of more polished alternatives (with variations in shape and size, sensor sizes, sensor placement, adhesives, material thicknesses, conductive inks, and more). Usually, only two or three iterations are needed before arriving at a final product that not only meets client requirements, but often surpasses them.

The conceptualization of a prototype in this manner is quick, practical, and hands-on. In a competitive market, time is a precious commodity, so the faster a product can reach the market the better. However, this way of working can only be successful when both parties involved are dedicated and act as sparring partners – valuing each other’s advice and feedback – and fully committed to the success of the project.
